We wanted to share with you a recent commentary published in EdSource by Bill Honig, former California State Superintendent of Instruction and former chair of California’s Instructional Quality Commission. He clearly lays out the significant differences between inclusive (which we call Constructive) Ethnic Studies, and Liberated Ethnic Studies. He also reinforces the fact that California rejected the Liberated Model, and explains why an inclusive and transparent approach to Ethnic Studies is needed to advance critical thinking skills and better prepare students to participate in our democracy.
This article, which speaks to community members and educators, is particularly important as the Liberated ES proponents are pursuing $50 million of new state funding and continue to market their approach to local school districts, public university systems, and in the legislature.
Please share this article with friends and colleagues. We need your help in educating communities about the importance of removing ideological agendas from Ethnic Studies and selecting an inclusive or Constructive approach.
If you would like to lend a hand with an ACES project, please let us know by emailing calethstudies@gmail.com. There are several volunteer opportunities available now. The time commitment is a few hours over the next few weeks and completely flexible with your schedule. If you are comfortable searching online and entering information into a spreadsheet, that would be especially helpful right now.
Thank you for your ongoing support!
